There is a reality for a Christian that is both amazingly wonderful and frightfully full of responsibility. That reality is that one who has invited Christ into his or her life is now, quite literally, the temple of God’s Spirit, and further, our bodies are “members” of Christ, literally.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[a] 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[b]1 Corinthians 6:15-17 New International Version (NIV)
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New International Version (NIV)
This is not a blog about sexual immorality, but I share these verses of scripture to illustrate just how very much everything we do as Christians is something that Jesus Himself is part of, because He is so very united with us, and we with Him.
When Jesus was about to leave this earth, He prayed the following prayer in the hearing of his disciples so that they would understand how incredibly close He wanted them, and us, to be with Him:
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22-23 New International Version (NIV)
The responsibility, the privilege, of such a union should both sober us and thrill us daily. It should affect how we relate to people, how we work, what we entertain ourselves with, what we eat. Our bodies should be seen as a Holy Temple, a chosen dwelling place of the Most High God.
Talk about “sparkle”!!! We can shine with the life of Christ, because He has for some amazing reason, desired and chosen to dwell right inside of us.
